Marine Boards vs Standard Plywood: What to Use for Formwork

Plywood is plywood, right? Not quite. On a formwork site exposed to wet concrete, rain and Nigerian humidity, the difference between marine board and standard plywood shows up fast — in surface finish, number of reuses, and ultimately cost.

The real difference

Marine board is bonded with water-resistant adhesives and made from higher-grade veneers with fewer voids. That means it resists delamination when it gets wet, holds a smoother concrete face, and survives more pours. Standard plywood may be cheaper up front, but it swells, separates and fails far sooner.

Which thickness?

For most slab and wall formwork, thickness drives stiffness and finish quality. Feranliz Wood stocks 17mm (₦38,000), 18mm (₦55,000) and 20mm (₦65,000) sheets, with other thicknesses on request. Thicker boards span further between supports and give a flatter face — worth it where the concrete will be left exposed.

Get more pours per sheet

Treat the face with a release agent, store boards flat and dry, and you’ll get noticeably more cycles out of a marine board than ordinary ply. Over a project, that reuse is where the savings are.
